Topic: number of hosted servers

Hey, I was just curious, as a fellow network game programmer, how many servers you currently host (not including those put up by the community)?
When you first went live, did you find you had to launch more game servers to keep up with the insurgence of players?
Also, how do you host your servers. Are you paying for some dedicated server space, or did you put up your own servers in your own personal home.
Thanks!

Re: number of hosted servers

Are you referring to how many servers the Teeworlds team has, or how many servers an individual game hoster manages?

Re: number of hosted servers

I am referring to how many game servers the Teeworld team has and has had, in total. I'm just curious. I suppose it would be interesting to hear also where (in the world) you are hosting as well. If this is information you wouldn't want to release I understand.

I don't know what you mean by "the teeworlds team", but anyone can host teeworlds servers at any place in the world. You can host servers on your own Internet, you can also buy a "vps" which is basically a computer somewhere else that has all the ports opened so you can host servers on those. (For money...) smile

I don't know if any of the developers host servers, but it's not like they are the main server hosters for teeworlds. For example: Salad, Broken and I pay a monthly fee for a vps in Dallas, TX. We call our severs "Lone Star", we are basically the main server hosters for North America.

Hope this helps,
Nater

There are, as far as I know, no official Teeworlds servers hosted by developers. What the development team hosts is this website and a few master servers, but no actual game servers. All game servers out there have come into existence as a result of the loving tees.

There really should be some official servers though; a few for every continent

That's an interesting idea. Why do you see the need for that? How would we decide who the "official" hoster for a continent is?

Re: number of hosted servers

What do you think of a (password protected?) forum server that would be the place for community tees to hang out? big_smile

And yeah: there should be some official servers. And all hosting vanilla since there are the least number of vanilla servers.

Re: number of hosted servers

Donate $100 and I'm sure it could be done, at least for a month.
Otherwise it will be done as before:
If there are enough player in a country, so it is worth to host a server, there will be a server hosted by anyone of them.

Re: number of hosted servers

Why would it be needed to have official servers? I mean, at that point, we're not lacking of servers in any of the three official gametypes.

Re: number of hosted servers

Because there are some countries who lack servers with low ping. It's easy to say we do not need any official servers if you are living in a well developed country, especially Europe. But it's sth. completely different if you are e.g. living in Africa. So I do understand why people might demand official servers. But as we are not a profit-oriented company we do not have any big ressources to fund worldwide servers. It is up to everyone playing this game to help creating a server infrastructure. That is open source. Those who can afford to help us should do it smile

Re: number of hosted servers

There are over 1000 servers now, that should be enough.

None of them are officially, I (like others) host a server though.
The game's masterservers run on various boxes (provided by Kottizen and me to be more precise) of which none is dedicated though. I'm just working on getting a third master up again (UK).
Other ones are in Germany and Sweden.
