Topic: [Suggestion] Statistics

Hi, guys!

This might have been discussed already, and is very important issue relating current situation.

Been playing a lot this game, not as much as some but more then the others,
and what seems really awkward is that number of players haven't grown much over time. If my client is right it's the same as previous year and another year before previous one.
It's really sad to see new people come, get their ass kicked and go away to never return.

So, while the client is stable how about concentrating development on things that would bring people into the game.

Why not make a client with multiple instances and collect statistics on which one is the best for gathering community, or what favorite mods should be made official, what makes people happy and what rules them away from servers?

Re: [Suggestion] Statistics

About the "game lasting" comment it's especially true for teeworlds because there's no feeling of achievement for playing this game other than wanting to get better, and thats not a huge incentive to most people.

Making more mods official would probably hurt the community as it would split the amount of players in each gametype and make the community seem smaller.

The development is going and more tilesets and features are going to be implemented but I doubt most of these features (like automapper, skin customization, demo player, stats, etc) would make a person that has picked up this game for a day make him feel like he should stick around because of all these features.

Because teeworlds has no real gameplay change or feeling of being in a process of achieving something, people may just play it for a bit and get bored of it.
(and example of "change" that people like can be altitude, another 2d skill based indie game where leveling up and unlocking stuff keeps people interested. The player might not be getting better, but he/she feels like hes accomplishing something by unlocking stuff. Because teeworlds is focused on everyone starting with the same thing (which isnt a bad thing), it might needs to have a different system of making the player feel like he is achieving something other than skill).

Even with the changes I'll assume the community will stay small because its deceiving simplicity and its "baby" graphics style. (or the point lameplay said, getting owned and leaving for good)

Making more mods official would probably hurt the community as it would split the amount of players in each gametype and make the community seem smaller.

I really don't understand that point. It would only catch more players on standard gametypes and offer a larger variety of quality mods to the beginner.

Also, in my opinion, Teeworlds does not have to (not saying it shouldn't) adapt to the will of the medium player and change its main aspects since this is no commercial game and noone is rewarded on the number of players on our servers. Teeworlds has its principals and it will stick to them, no matter what the more people tend to like.

Besides, you cannot say the size of the community is the same as in past years. Players on vanilla as well as some used-to-be popular gametypes in 0.4 are getting more and more rare to find whereas some other mods are filling in. I don't think you can speak of the Teeworlds community as a whole anymore, the playstyle of the different gametypes  is sometimes so split up that the players that enjoy one will unlikely enjoy the others.

Oh, btw, hi lameplay!

Re: [Suggestion] Statistics

Btw. the gamer client supports some statistics.

An achievement system is a bad idea in my opinion. At first, you would need ranked servers. Now all players are equal. When you build in an achievement system players will benefit from that making it harder for new players to become better.

I'm lost here. Where did i mention a achievement  system?

Re: [Suggestion] Statistics

I'm guessing right now DDrace is likely one of the most played mods ever. For one, it's creative; I'll admit. But you can only take that so far before it get's obnoxious or too easy, which is has done. Secondly, there's a bajillion sever's hosting it. By simply having more severs, there's a higher change new players will find and play them first than to play vanilla. Or players will play them more because they are open while vanilla severs are full.
If enough people want to "official" DDrace, I don't mind (I'd even like it) but it must go through "refining".
Of anything I like about DDrace, it's the freeze, the freeze turret that shoots out little balls of plasma, and the weapons. (I would like a new look for the turret, rifle, and laser, so people don't mix vanilla and non-vanilla up) But everything else can go. Everything else don't, in my opinion, add that much to it and makes it too complicated.

Give others the respect you wish to be respected with. In the mean time, enjoy the website!

Re: [Suggestion] Statistics

Ok. so what I wanted to say, that "Not many people stay ingame",  wonder why though.
To have assumptions backed up, client could gather statistics on average playtime, numbers of games, how many times client has started a month, etc.
Which would give a base for solutions in many ways, starting from gameplay and up to player quantity or anything.
Some part of the info could go into accounts for "achievment system" for example, other remain hidden for developer purposes.
Every time game idea changes course, there are stats to build upon and system to track its changes.

Re: [Suggestion] Statistics

"achievment system" is not out of topic but i don't think it's even worth mentioning.

"whether to ignore the size of community or not" should be the main argument in this thread.

i believe more developers(if not players) are on Franchan and Drune side,
KISS,FOSS,100% skill dependent gameplay and the "baby" graphics,
every principal is not so mainstream, even though it's the right way to make a game...

that said. We should have expected that the community is not large and will never be.

if it's our time, it's our time
i prefer long live with the spirit rather than violating our principals to fit the mainstream.
