Re: [How to] create a 24 / 7 server?

Isn't it bad for the computer if you never shut it down?

No. Just for the electronic bill. (Not sure whether this is the right word.)

Re: [How to] create a 24 / 7 server?

Actually the hardware used in personal computers is not meant to be running 24/7. Most servers use special hardware that was created for this sole purpose, so in fact running your pc 24/7 might not be good for your computer. If you are really intending to host a server 24/7 I highly recommend renting a dedicated server or at least a virtual private server.

Laptops can get overheated, if thats what you mean.

A bad computer shoud be a good ideia to make it:

.One computer that dosent use many resources shud be a nice solution.
You will not pay mutch more in your energy bill and you can run the server (Because you will use bust the Black Window)

.Using a Private Server is the best solution
You will pay but you will have the server running widout anny problem

Bad computer are bad. They can need even more energy than high-end-pc's and they can jerk/lag.

Do you mean a "green" computer?
Better: Buy a server(pc).

Do you mean renting a vps?

If you never shut down the P.C it will have some problem later if you want it all the times OPEN and never close you can also buy a Server P.C  .Server p.c`s created to run server and stay all the time open cool cool cool

If you want a perfect map for your own server you can PM me to make you one ^^

Please also try play nodes you may download it here!. And as always.Have a nice day

I know a company that is using an old Pentium 1 desktop PC as linux-server more then 10 years now. There is a replacement for that old stuff already. It's an AMD 1GHz means an old out sorted desktop PC. But since that Pentium 1 would still not die at all even the replacement is getting pretty old. I even know desktop PC that run with IDE software raid for many years now (and for sure even ones with nomal SATA). So I do not fear using a desktop PC with normal harddrives as 7x24 server (but if I would use it seriously I would create softwarereaid with mdadm). I know that there are some different HD-models that should run in theory longer and you can put lots of money in some hardware-raid that is (in the worst case) incompatible with the firmware of your replacement-controller and wipes out all your data.
The good thing on real servers is that they often fit into 19" rack and so you have more freedom with your legs avoiding pulling out power cable by misstake big_smile

Anyway I would not recommend to use a laptop as a server. And if you plan to run some VM-host on it then I would recommend to buy some SSD cause IO is almost more important in that cases then CPU. But I think that was not the question.

My laptop is online 24/7 since about 2 months and nothing happened. You should just not put it in your bed as it gets hot very fast.

Re: [How to] create a 24 / 7 server?

I hope you have a really good glass fibre connection, because otherwise I DO NOT recommend running a homeserver. Your PC shouldn't be a problem as much as your connection. There are enough laggy homeservers out there. We don't need even more. There are really cheap virtual servers out there that can run up to 10 server starting from 5 Euro a month.
And by the way: Mot computers have a sufficient cooling system, but some don't and are only meant to be used up to 12 hours, because they get very hot with every hour passing. So don't wonder why some hardware might be malten. There also is often a problem with routers/modems that get very hot when left on for ages. When they are too hot, they often tend to stop working.
The electronic bill shouldn't be too high by the way. The computer itsself doesn't use up too much energy, but therefore the computer screens use up quite a lot. So leave it switched off when running a server 24/7.

Re: [How to] create a 24 / 7 server?

Yea we know it that  but now i havent so much money i cant give even 5 Euro in month if your P.C is SERVER  P.C; [ server p.c`s are made only for servers they can do other things too but you buy them for that ] so a server p.c can stay open for a year if you get a good one.The prices for a good starts from 1000 Euro;but a simple one from 600-1000.

Anyway you can also run a server for a simple p.c but not for 24/7 you can run it hmm....from 2:00pm-1:00am    you close it on 1:00am and you run it on 2:00pm again. But be carefull your p.c it does'n be like my 11 years old we tack about the new ones 2 years or 3.Also your intenet must be good and if you live in greece like me dont even think about it. tongue

Re: [How to] create a 24 / 7 server?

We have been talking about a Server P.C. oO

I assume that Windows was meant here. Using a Linux server via ssh is much different than using the Windows GUI.

Running a server at home behind a router may cause problems because of other traffic (esp. upload) and high energy consummation.

A normal DSL connection for customers is not designed to provide a fast upload.

Normal home computer have non-ECC ram which means that they don't look for memory errors. Using a PC for a short time 8 hours or so may not be a problem but after several month the PC may crash and need to be rebooted.

Offering services at home may cause security problems because the server must be reachable from outside. If you don't patch the system regularly it may be vulnerable.
