Topic: [SUGGESTION] Getting Started

Well, I know there is a suggestions topic, but I did not want to dirty it up with pictures and stuff.

I think there should be, on first run of teeworlds, a "getting started" page. I took a half hour to draw a GUI for it. Yeah... there might be some useless information in it, but if the dev's manage to implement it, they could edit it.

I made it for a reason. I recently introduced teeworlds to 2 of my friends, and were confused when they started playing. They couldn't find a way to talk, nor change other settings.

Here are some screenies.

Re: [SUGGESTION] Getting Started

Well maybe not like the one you did. But there is a tutorial planned already : https://github.com/teeworlds/teeworlds/issues#issue/38

Re: [SUGGESTION] Getting Started

I agree with ubu about a movement tutorial.

Re: [SUGGESTION] Getting Started

Thats cool, i like it ;D

Re: [SUGGESTION] Getting Started

Thanks, maybe someone will make it official smile

Re: [SUGGESTION] Getting Started

Some things need to be changed (like why teach noobs how to flood servers? they already learn them by themselves. Tell them there are a lot of bots outside too?), and as said marik it's already planned.

Re: [SUGGESTION] Getting Started

So far, 100% of the votes say yes. big_smile
I wouldn't make step 5 a mandatory part of the tutorial-it's often used for chicken shit spam wars anyway-and I definitely think a movement demonstrations step (especially for the hook) should be before step 3; it's way more important than screen shots. Less important and non-general stuff could be it's own step that doesn't have to be viewed before playing the game; like how to make binds. Also, a weapon's chart would be nice. Giving all the pro's, con's, damage, how it's unique and it's best advantages scenarios.

Give others the respect you wish to be respected with. In the mean time, enjoy the website!

Marik says that the one that is planned is not this. The one that is planned is a movement tutorial, such as moving left, jumping, etc.

edit: like...there is a tee instructor (bot) and he says "follow me!" and the player follows him and tries to catch up with him, or the tutorial is failed.. etc.

I was about to do that, LOL. I started it this morning.

Re: [SUGGESTION] Getting Started

Useless. Each player with an iq above toast is able to find out how teeworlds work. and its not that hard to press escape for the settings ingame, to try them out. (remember: many keys are unique with the settings of other games)

Re: [SUGGESTION] Getting Started

Well... that may be true about the settings and such, but it might be useful to include the skin section in the First Start of teeworlds.

Weapons page: I don't think it will be useful, but if someone could make it a website, then it could be useful.

Wow thats nice too^^

Re: [SUGGESTION] Getting Started

Actually, people can see that by themselves... they don't need a tutorial for it.
I remember pretty well my first steps with Teeworlds... and I really had a huge problem with controls. It took me a lot of time to find out the chat button, and especially how to switch the weapons you picked up. And that's the case with a lot of newbies, they don't know how to switch weapon, and they can't ask the people because they just don't know how to chat.
Yeah, your pics look nice but... think 2 seconds ; do you really think they are useful? I mean, it's sooo much faster to test every weapon than to read that.

Re: [SUGGESTION] Getting Started

As I said, I don't find the weapons useful, but find the name page, skin page, and dynamic cam page useful.

edit: and maybe the link to the forum in the settings.

Some of it is less known... For awhile in dm and keep on wondering, "How the hell do they keep on getting the sword?" For the longest time I thought it was something everyone had in stock but you just had to wait for it to charge then use it. I also never thought about using the rocket launcher for rj or using it to greatly increasing speed until the run maps came out. I was like, "wth?" when people instantly flew into the air, seemingly going indefinitely higher and higher. I also never knew about hammer flying until I saw a really old Teewars video and I was like, "I can so put this into a race..." and thus, hrace was born.

I guess I'm as dumb as a doorknob for not knowing that right off the bat. tongue
And I also said the weapons stuff shouldn't be mandatory since you figure out 90% of that about 5 minutes into a game and that there should be extra tabs you could click if you were curious.

btw nuby, shotgun and rocket launcher's damage differs according to accuracy and also adding that rocket jumps does damage to yourself might be helpful...

i used to think it was a special weapon with great power.... really, i thought it would be strong.
serious: how the hell a player cant imagine its a weapon spawning like all other weapons, just with an higher respawn time and less spots?

Re: [SUGGESTION] Getting Started

It's fairly simple: I hadn't played any game like Teeworlds before I played Teeworlds. Probably if I had experience with games like Teeworlds, I could have made a logical guess at how to get it, but I hadn't so I was as lost as ever. xD

It still is. If a nood tries to kill a pro with it, they'll miserably fail. But I've used it as more of a stealth weapon. I hid behind platforms knowing I'm helpless to kill from far distances. But if I get my speed up-and possibly confuse them by hooking them around-I can slice them and they won't even know what him them. The problem is most people are naive and think just because of it's high damage they'll be invincible, but it's quite the opposite in most cases... you have to depend on skill. D:

Re: [SUGGESTION] Getting Started

I really like this suggestion, as it would work on many levels. Not only would people have a more accessible and enjoyable introduction to the game, but it would also answer many very basic questions that are now left unanswered or asked repeatedly on the forum.

Also my compliments on your graphical presentation, it makes all the difference!

Re: [SUGGESTION] Getting Started

Wow! I would love to see these guides in Teeworlds. I had issues with key bindings and weapons myself in the beginning and this would've helped me a lot. I still have to learn about movement so a tutorial would be great as well even if it's static, not necessarily in-game with a bot. Great work, alias! smile
