Topic: LAN only setup (for young children)

My children love playing teeworlds.  I started them on a LAN (dm against each other).

They had their first taste of play with random online players tonight.  Great fun but they learnt a few new words and phrases that I was hoping not to teach them for a few years.

Is there a way they can play over out LAN without being able to join the hundreds of online games that pop up under the Internet tab in the startup menu?

Re: LAN only setup (for young children)

You can edit C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts and add the following lines:
127.0.0.1 master1.teeworlds.com
127.0.0.1 master2.teeworlds.com
127.0.0.1 master3.teeworlds.com
127.0.0.1 master4.teeworlds.com

Save it and go to your Teeworlds folder. Launch the .bat-file "config_directory.bat" and then remove the file "masters.cfg" in the new folder that appeared.

Thanks for your swift reply.  I can edit the hosts file but can't save it.  Might be a UAC thing in Windows 7?

I would commend to use a modification of the teeworlds-application. I know that "Sushi's Client Pack" for example is supporting a feature where u can disable the chat. So your kids could join online parties without being able to learn new words...

I think those kids know *how* not to play on Internet feature, the problem would be to forbid them to do so, to remove this ability. The sushi client pack (that feature originally comes from Teecomp btw) only gives the possibility to ignore the chat.

Re: LAN only setup (for young children)

Thanks all.

I think the biggest eye opener for the boys was actually the name that one player had chosen for themselves!  So it seems like Kottizen's suggestion is the best overall (provided I can sort out the UAC issue).

Yes. Copy the file to your desktop, edit it, save it and then copy (and replace) it to the etc\ folder.

Re: LAN only setup (for young children)

Here is an easy and simple solution for your problem. If your child is smart, though... it might not work.
All you have to do is screw up the masters.cfg file in the teeworlds directory.

Simple Way

1. Navigate to: C:\Users\<Username>\AppData\Roaming\Teeworlds
2. Delete the masters.cfg file. Do not run Teeworlds until you have finished the rest of the steps!
3. Download this custom masters.cfg and copy it to "C:\Users\<Username>\AppData\Roaming\Teeworlds".
4. After the copy has completed, make sure that your children (hopefully younger than 10) do not know of this special folder (data directory).
5. Run Teeworlds. Under the internet tab, the server list should show Refreshing Master Servers. Then, after realizing that the edited file had given it broken links for the server list, it should say "No Servers Found".

Well, I wrote this because I didn't really understand Kottizen's way.. but he's more experienced than me, so I probably am just too young to learn his more advanced ways.

Kottizen told exactly the same method as you did.

Re: LAN only setup (for young children)

@CarmineZ: You are wrong. As kottizen said, if you change the hosts file of your pc in the way he wrote above, the teeworlds client will not be able to connect to the masterservers. In order to change this hosts file, one needs administration rights, so normal users are not able to change the hosts file back into it's original state.

if teeworlds is redownloaded, the data directory is not deleted and the masters.cfg file is the same as before.

This seems to work brilliantly.

Thank you all you clever people!
