Topic: [HELP] Spam problem

Well... i'm one of the support staff and I'm not the right one to open a topic in this section but... well, I think that's a big problem.
In the last days we've seen a lot of spam users registered to the forum that bump up old and new topics with some random phrases like "I just found it on Google, thanks!".
Here a list of the users, always called Rogers*
http://www.teeworlds.com/forum/userlist … r+criteria
I think we should do something to prevent this... I know, there are moderators and there is the report function but it's not an easy and fast way to fight against spammers. I think someone, maybe Teeworlds mod, could insert a captcha-protection or something like this to this punBB.
Waiting for an answer, I invite you all to report messages from these users to mods with the report function (bottom right of every post). Regards,

Lanta

Re: [HELP] Spam problem

This is indeed a very persistent problem which is manageable but certainly annoying. You are right to say that reporting is for now the only way to combat these evil acts, but it would certainly be worthwhile to discuss other solutions as well.

A Capthcha-protection for registering could be a possible solution, although I'm not too sure if present day forum bots will be halted by it. We should certainly give this (or other counter-measures) a chance though. Unfortunately I won't be able to set this up as I don't have access to the forum settings but maybe one of the developers can. Until then I'll have to deal with with these troubles manually.

Re: [HELP] Spam problem

Hey, you should delete these "Rogers" completely (including their posts, threads and signatures with URLs), because everyone can read their advertisement.

A captcha would not solve the problem, as the "Rogers" are controlled by a human, not a bot.

If I were you, I would ban the IP-Range used by the spammer and report abuse at his ISP.

You should only delete they posts, threads and signatures, if they have only spammed on the forums, otherwise if there was a conversion between them or if they added anything to the forums, their complete absence would seem strange. A conversation between people with one invisible person would be very confusing to look at after all memory of him/her was erased.

Re: [HELP] Spam problem

Don't the Moderators get's the Users IP?
Couse it's even another Roger in! (Registered 2010-04-11) Which is still active.

Oh, Don't they ban the ip instead of the Normal account?

Re: [HELP] Spam problem

It's standard practice to remove signatures and post of spammers, if they have made one or more post. If users haven't made any posts we don't always remove their signature as this means extra work while it shows no different to a forum visitor. They still get a permanent IP-ban though. The good news is that I experimented a bit with IP range bans and if it worked correctly we should no longer see these Rogers among us.

Re: [HELP] Spam problem

Yes, I've reported this "rogers" person over 3 times.
He keeps on creating accounts, though, and already today i have seen 3 rogers accounts (rogers with a number after it)
I'm getting tired of this, and I think any rogers should be banned.

USA pride. What now.

This would be strange as the records show no new Roger accounts. Could you please point out where you have seen these accounts today? Thanks.

Re: [HELP] Spam problem

I wanna resume this old topic. Someone has changed but this problem is "still alive" (like Glados in Portal). Lot of things changed, now the server admin is m!nus as far as I know and we've seen some update of the forum CMS, punBB. Useless updates for this problems, spammers are again here and they are more than in the past (I reported to moderators about 10 posts in 2 days).
Are we going to do something? Spammers are more active than the community!

Re: [HELP] Spam problem

You maybe should disable the signature for people with less than 5/10 posts. The only way those bots are advertising is with their sign (who gets quickly referenced by google bots).

Not Luck, Just Magic.

Now, they evolved. Now they post links also in the message... sad

Use ReCaptcha in registration. I am using it a long time and I am maximally happy with it smile It is free and simply implementable system for a huge amount of programming languages, including PHP.

Goodbye all. Account inactive since March 2011.

Problem is, as we already said, that those bots look like real humans, and humans bypass captchas.

Re: [HELP] Spam problem

Yes, but captchas slow them down. How about adding captchas to the first 10 posts for a new user?

aka cheesy

More useful: what about disable links inside post and signature if posts < 10? XD

Re: [HELP] Spam problem

Could it be that your spam protection cuts off longer initial posts? I was able to fix mine by editing it after posting, not sure what happened, don't want to create multiple spam-topics to try if I can reproduce this:
1) new thread, enter long text
2) preview: everything ok
3) send
4) answer bot-test
Result: New thread / initial post is cut off after a few lines
