Topic: Sound mutes if an external sound appears

If I'm playing teeworlds and a sound from pidgin from an incomming message appears the sound in teeworlds is muted. I have tested it with and without the option "Mute when not active" but there was no difference. I have posted it on github because I thought this is maybe a bug. But Oy said just this:

Invalid - this seems to be linked to your OS/sound drivers.
There are various threads about this topic in the net.

I haven't figured out now how to solve this problem. I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 64 Bit (installed from the minimal CD).

Re: Sound mutes if an external sound appears

You mean pidgin guifications? Or just a message?

I dont know about pidgin or Ubuntu, but i'm able to use/hear external sounds without teeworlds sounds getting muted (Win7).

Re: Sound mutes if an external sound appears

I have figured out some new things. If I minimize teeworlds with the minimize command and a sound through pidgin appears (a notification of something) the sound in teeworlds get muted too. But if I hear some sounds in firefox through the flash player all is working fine.

Re: Sound mutes if an external sound appears

Known bug in Ubuntu (think it's because of GNOME). Works fine under KDE or Xfce.

Re: Sound mutes if an external sound appears

I'm using LXDE (because the user defined minimal installation). Maybe it's the GTK+ engine in pidgin (GNOME uses this engine too). But if this is a bug I will wait for a fix.

I have Ubuntu 10.04 64bit (GNOME) and use pidgin too, I don't have any sound issues, using PulseAudio. Some older versions of teeworlds / SDL had afaik problems with Alsa, maybe try another soundsystem?

Re: Sound mutes if an external sound appears

You have to recompile PulseAudio by yourself, or use Alsa.

Re: Sound mutes if an external sound appears

If you just remove pulseaudio and add a plug + dmix plugin to your alsa route, everything should work fine. Only thing you might be missing is per-application-volume settings, but in turn you get more control over your channels. Also it usually takes less CPU and makes less problems with multible users trying to access the sound device if you configure the permissions accordingly.
