Topic: [QUESTION] DinoSmash, do you support it?

Much has been made over the use of the TeeWorlds engine in the iPhone game, DinoSmash, while it was legally OK for them to use the TeeWorlds engine for profit, do you support this type of behavior? If you have an iDevice do you own DinoSmash and if you don't own an iDevice, but did, would you buy DinoSmash knowing it was a port of the TeeWorlds engine? Keep discussion friendly, this doesn't need to start an argument I just want to know people's opinions of the whole DinoSmash ordeal and the possibility of other Developers doing the same, if another Developer used the engine would you support them also?

Be there. Aloha.

Re: [QUESTION] DinoSmash, do you support it?

Why are you asking the community? Ask the devs directly!
Obvious the community will say you no. Teeworlds is Teeworlds, and opensource is opensource.
But opensource it's so opened that got also some bad sides like this. The actual Teeworlds license admin profit usage of the code without any notifications to the devs, only a "credit" to the original game.
Think about DinoSmash, but also about Geeplay.com... this projects are living on Teeworlds... btw, they can.
Nothing more to say.

I don't think it's "obvious" the community will dislike DinoSmash, if I remember correctly some of them actually supported it when people first realized what had happened. Here's my thought, I dislike DinoSmash, not because it's using the TeeWorlds engine, but because it's outright a bad port, they added their control scheme (obviously you can't use a keyboard and mouse) and it ruins gameplay, I'm also not a fan of the Dinos, I think they settled in-between a direct port and their own game using the TeeWorlds engine and it didn't in my opinion turn out well. That being said, if someone made a direct port and did well I would have no problem with it because it would still be TeeWorlds. I also wouldn't have a problem if a game took the TeeWorlds engine and made something better than TeeWorlds with it, if someone were to take it and turn it into a full out 2D platform shooter and did it so well that it surpassed TeeWorlds (which would be very difficult) I would support it because it was a great game. I guess my question is, is the rest of the TeeWorlds community so loyal that they wouldn't support a port of the TeeWorlds engine even if it was done well? With DinoSmash, they basically ruined the TeeWorlds feel, but if someone were to do it right, maybe even reinvent gameplay, would you support it even thought it used the TeeWorlds engine?

Re: [QUESTION] DinoSmash, do you support it?

That's a nice start for a nice topic big_smile
I remember when Dinosmash was launched. Many people flamed about it, said that was not a simple port but another game with the same engine "ported".
Some others (and I don't agree with them), bought and downloaded it to their iPhone simply because it was similar to their favourite game, Teeworlds.
Now, I haven't the power to decide what's right and what's wrong... but I can say you a thing. Until Teeworlds will be developed constantly and until there will be this fantastic community behind there will be no problems. Maybe, in the future, someone will try to "fork" this project making it more funny and perfect... we'll see what will happen. I bet they will stay here and support the original idea big_smile

Re: [QUESTION] DinoSmash, do you support it?

I dont think this game is playable on a high level with anything else but a mouse. Of course this doesnt say anything about porting, but imho its pointless to port such a game to game consoles and iCrap because it will fail at playability. And I dont like the idea of dinosmash because dinos didnt have thumbs, and you need thumbs to use a shotgun, so its totally pointless.

We will meet again when the flowers spread their glorious scent of victory and the birds sing us the melody of justice...

Future is now tongue
http://sciwars.org/
scosu ( author of modpack) is currently working on a fork of Teeworlds. Well i´m not up to date how far the progress is but i guess he will announce this project when it´s ready for public tests.

And i still think that Nodes is a standalone game too because you need a special client and it is completly different gameplay. Same goes with TeeStrike although you could had played it with the original client.

@Topic
As long as the "new" game is still freeware i would atleast give it a try. But i would never pay for a game which is more or less Teeworlds just with other graphics and physics/gameplay related stuff.
Since most modders are able to create similar stuff for teeworlds if the new game has elements which could improve/add something to Teeworlds it would be kinda pointless for me to pay for it.
Additionally i agree with torch this game requires mouse+keyboard for a high quality game experience. This is actually no problem if you want to port the game to consoles because most or all of them support keyboards and mouse.

Re: [QUESTION] DinoSmash, do you support it?

It's not the point of the topic. It will be never playable on a gadget without a mouse and keyboard. These games on iPhone etc. are funny but for high level gaming not useful.

Actually if someone were to make use of the touch screen instead of a simple dpad like DinoSmash did they could really get very workable controls, yeah it might not be the same, but it could be done so they work better than DinoSmash.

Re: [QUESTION] DinoSmash, do you support it?

Although this discussion is somewhat related to Teeworlds, I doubt it will contribute to the development of Teeworlds, or serve any other purpose for that matter. Maybe DinoSmash has its own forum where there is room for this discussion.
