Topic: [SOLVED] Can't start game; editing .cfgs/deleting game didn't help!

I'm running a Windows XP computer, for starters.  Okay, I enabled some setting or other that made Teeworlds stop starting up for me (after a couple days of problem-free gaming).  So, following advice of other threads here, I tweaked the settings.cfg file in the Application Data\Teeworlds folder.  That didn't solve anything; the startup window said 'failed to open autoexec.cfg' and 'failed to open settings.cfg', as it did before.

So, I decided to delete everything...the game folder, the game's application data, the .cfg files, everything.  Then I redownloaded the game and set it up just as before when it was working (aka the defaults).  And trying to start the game, I get the same 'failed to open autoexec.cfg/settings.cfg' messages.

I went to look in my Application Data\Teeworlds folder and, while the game re-built all the folders in there when I reinstalled, it did not build new copies of autoexec.cfg and settings.cfg; I no longer have those files, and for some reason can't get them back.

If somebody could offer me downloads of their .cfg files or something, I believe I could solve my issue.

"failed to open settings.cfg" is not a problem, it's a feature. First time you starts Teeworlds there is no setting-file, and Teeworlds will use the standard settings. Then, if you change your settings and quit the game correctly (either by clicking "Quit" > "Yes", typing "quit" in the console or pressing CTRL + SHIFT + Q) it'll create a settings.cfg for you.

If you not quit Teeworlds correctly (like, turning off you computer, kills the program via Taskmanager etc.) you won't get any settings.cfg. That's not a problem, you'll just see the standard settings when you load Teeworlds again.

Teeworlds will not load though; this is what I'm explaining.  The console reads the 'failed to open' messages at its bottom, and the game window is frozen.  I have waited 10 minutes with it open to make sure it was actually frozen, and indeed, the process was not responding the whole time.

sounds like you have problems with your pc? maybe a virus, that uses too much cpu, so your pc can't start other programmes correctly. or your pc is just too slow... maybe you should post a little describtion of your pc.
can be also a problem with your drivers, other running programmes...........

It's possible a virus could be doing this.  But understand, the game was running perfectly before I started messing with the .cfg files.  This is why I'm requesting if someone could allow me to download the two .cfg files in question from them.

Re: [SOLVED] Can't start game; editing .cfgs/deleting game didn't help!

UPDATE: My theory was correct.  Since nobody here was willing to offer me their .cfg files, I simply had a friend download the game and then give me copies of the .cfg files that formed in their Application Data\Teeworlds folder.  After placing these files into my own same directory, Teeworlds proceeded to start up just fine.

So anyways, since no-one could help me maybe I can help others.  Here's my fix, and it worked for my Windows XP computer.

If issues result from your .cfg files, where they fail to open on the console information or they say they are initalizing but the game stops at that point, then simply access C:\Documents and Settings\[User]\Application Data\Teeworlds, delete the settings and autoexec .cfgs located within, and ask a friend to give you their own copies of those .cfgs.  The game should now run just fine.

Alternatively, you can also obtain 'fresh' .cfgs again by using another computer with the game, or by using another user account on the same computer.  Or, since I uploaded them to help those with this issue, just grab them here: http://d.imagehost.org/download/0777/Teeworlds_CFGs  I also included the 'masters.cfg' file located in the same place, in case anybody needed that.  (It can more easily be recreated then the other .cfgs though...simply run the 'teeworlds_srv' file in your main Teeworlds directory and a new copy of masters.cfg will be made.)

It seems Teeworlds will only create the .cfgs once per user account, the first time you run the game.  Even if you delete the game completely and reinstall, you will never get these .cfgs created on that account again.  A rather troublesome issue if you need them again.

Hope this helps others with this issue!

UPDATED UPDATE: Thank you Lanta for the assistance.  smile  I managed to work around the issue and get them again via another friend, but I appreciate your help too.  I now made a link (just above) to these two .cfg files on a public uploader, so this problem can be easily resolved by people with the same issue as me later on.
