Topic: [SUGGESTION] Spectator far view

Hello world
Here is another improbable idea, for improbable full-of-free-time admins.
The idea, would be to make spectators able to zoom/unzoom. It could be useful to see the whole game, global player positions, teams strategies etc. A team during a clanwar could have a spectator member who could see the whole game and tell his team what strategy mistakes he saw after. We can easily imagine use the scroll to zoom and unzoom.
I suppose there would be a problem with the distance of the camera and the tile alignment such as in the editor, but who knows, someone here could have a genius idea ?
What do you think about that ?

Re: [SUGGESTION] Spectator far view

well... zooming would be kinda pointless because the server sends the player not all the time. At a specific distance the server stop to send the player and the player would disapear while zoomed out wink

Re: [SUGGESTION] Spectator far view

The reason why this isn't implemented, and wont be, is because the spectators can tell the other players what happens everywhere, and that is cheating.

Re: [SUGGESTION] Spectator far view

Well....there already is such a modded client. It can only zoom in and out in spectators view. However, this is a problem because most maps use a fixed quad background, so when zooming out, the sides of the view get blurry and messed up and one must use gfx_clear 1 in the console, resulting in that ugly yellow background.

I have not asked for permission yet to display the client, and I will soon ask the creator if I may. Hope this solves the discussion here.

Re: [SUGGESTION] Spectator far view

SushiTee, server which haven't many bandwith could disable this option, but bandwith is not always a problem (in LANs for example).

Somerunce, what's the difference with now ? I mean actually a spectator can already go everywhere on the map, see what happens, and talk to his team.
For tournaments, clanwars etc, a good solution to prevent cheating would be to have delay when you are spectator. Il you see what happened 10 earlier, it is useless to tell player what happens on the map !
It could be used with demos too, for a debriefing after a clanwar for example, and there is not way to cheat.
Anyway thanks for you answer.

Magix you're funny. A dev is posting they won't do it because it helps cheating, and you're going to post it. Something's wrong here, guess what.

Nope, this won't work if the server doesn't send out the other players' data.

I guess you can't image what this adds about complexity to the code. The data would need to be buffered and so on... That's IMO not a good idea.

A nice feature (which is already on the task-list) is the possibility to automatically "follow" a player while spectating.

Re: [SUGGESTION] Spectator far view

azmeuk: the server currently only sends the things that is within the range of the player view. For spectator zooming, the server would need to send things happening outside the player boundaries, making it possible to make modded clients with "radars" etc.

Player following is well good enough when it comes, I think.

As datag said :

So players wouldn't know the whole players positions.
In that case the only way to make a radar would be to connect the server both as a player and as a spectator, and effectively I don't see how to prevent that.

But the "far view" could perhaps be applied to demo watching ?

for serversided demos it would work... for client sided not

Re: [SUGGESTION] Spectator far view

...
darn.
i wanted that along time ago.
how about recording other players?

Re: [SUGGESTION] Spectator far view

What about spectators mode like in other fps:
-black screen (you cant see anything at death for tournament)
-follow with a possibility to follow only team
-overview as it is now

Re: [SUGGESTION] Spectator far view

@franchan: it should be no problem to change the code to spec other players or freely move over the whole map. But since the player isnt send all the time. So u just dont get the position of the other player. U cant record someone u dont receive wink
It only would work if the "thing" with following a player in spec is implemented (is planned) and you are spec smile

i recorded a serversided demo... about 5minutes... filesize was 20MB oO

@rajh: sounds nice smile
