Topic: My personal opinion for new TeeWorlds version - 0.6.0

Hello all.
As you know, developers are now making TeeWorlds 0.6.0 . You also know there will implemented Lua language. I haven't got much informations, so if I am wrong, then post it here.
Its not much time ago, there was a thread where Destiny requested game.svg.

Lappi wrote:

I have created a game.svg a couple of months ago, but I will not - and I encourage everybody not to do so - publish it. The result will be a flood of so called, would-be self-made game.pngs where a colour  is changed or some crappy standard shapes were added. If you really want to do a self made game.png you should go ahead and redraw the current one. This will help you to understand your gfx-application and the gfx-style better.

So please: DO NOT PUBLISH ANY game.svg !

I am afraid of releasing next TeeWorlds version. I know, its still far away. I am afraid of the same thing like Lappi said. Lua is very simple language and every idiot will learn it very fast. So there will be a thousands of modifications for client and server and there will not much good mods. Currently, TeeWorlds is written in C++. It is not easy language (but its able to learn), and when somebody learn it, he is having some >experience< and he makes good mods.
As the topic title says, this is just my opinion. I will happy when you send here your opinions or comments.

Obscurantism is bad. There is no exception. Obscurantism is bad.
Crappy mods (imho...) already exists, and they're made in C++, so language doesn't really matter. And if mods are played, that probably means that they arn't so bad.
Crappy mods won't be played, and so will disappear, that's the natural selection. (You know, Darwin etc smile )
Every growing project can see its community grows at the same time, and so there will be more noobs tommorrow than they are today. But it is not because the game is easy to play, or to mod, or to make maps for it...

Play ctf_fall if you dare!

We can only guess what the next version bring us with well it seems like many ppl are interested in adding new weapons etc etc.

Well its kinda same with food you never know how it tastes till you try it. I think same works for mods if they are good ppl will like and play them if not the mods simply dies as azmeuk already said.

And you mention that there will be thousands of modifications of the client and server. well actually lua is only serverside planned so its only about new gametype mods and these ones are easy to avoid as before mentioned if you don´t like them just don´t play them ^^.

I agree with azmeuk. I doubt there will be more bad mods when 0.6 comes out, thanks to Lua. Even if more mods do come out, the crap ones will simply die because they are crap, and therefore nobody will play them.

Though I know some people consider Instagib to be a crap mod, even though it's extremely popular.

How is 0.6.0 going, anybody? According to trac, no changes to the source have been made in 3 months. That's a long time! smile

Re: My personal opinion for new TeeWorlds version - 0.6.0

There's no reason to fear 0.6.0, or the implementation of Lua programming. Yes, it will become easier to code mods, and therefor more people will try this. These mods will be of different quality, some will be good, some will be bad. The good once will grow big, and be played by many (for example instagib), the bad once will disappear within a few days, because nobody plays them.

The most important focus should be that people are free to use their creativity to put their ideas into practice. Teeworlds is all about customization, in both graphics and gameplay. Any development which improves on this is a good development, as it will renew the gameplay possibilities of players and attract more people.

If it wasn't for the ability to make your own graphics and game modes the forum would have long been empty except for the support section, and the game would only have a fraction of the players it has now. A majority of the Teeworlds players plays only one or two mods, and plays only because of these mods. Teeworlds depends on mods, and in order to expand it will therefore always focus on ways to improve on the accessibility towards the development of mods.

There seems to be an ever growing tension among the existing coders / artists for competition from others, usually new players. More and more these core people try to hold on to their graphics and modifications, while these belong to the forum owners the second they posted them. People must learn to accept a thanks for their product, and then give the community a chance to work with it. By letting them play with it and improve it there will be some nice final product.

Just as the official graphics are free to be modified, custom material can only have a limited amount of rights as well. Yes, if someone releases your material under his name, he should be frowned upon. But when someone takes a certain part of your design, and builds his own structure around it, this should be applauded as creative freedom instead as some kind of "theft". A large portion of the tension on this forum would then disappear overnight.
