Topic: Map Contest

This is just an idea, but it would be awesome if there could be a TW map contest. If anyone is interested, I will try to recruit some more judges.

I need to figure out something to put here.

Re: Map Contest

There was the teetv mapmaking contest, maybe in cooperation with teetv you could make another one, but I think it is too early right now oO

Goodbye all. Account inactive since March 2011.

Re: Map Contest

The success of such competitions rely totally on who the judges are, and how much time they take to test the maps. When we had the TeeTV mapping contest, it was more of a way to make more people do quality maps, than to bring out "the best mapper of all time". Anyway, go ahead, but it's hard to judge maps, since the judges have to be both really good players, to be able to analyze strategy aswell as movement, and good mappers to know what is possible both visually and technically.

Also, making the new official maps took months, deciding that the best map of a competition should go official is a really bad idea, cause there's a pretty high risk that none of the maps made for the competition, which might only last for a week or two, won't be anywhere near the standard required.

Good point. I think some good prizes would be teeskins and weapons. Maybe a special title, instead of "member," like "Contest Winner" would also be appropriate.

Okay, I plan on three categories, CTF, DM/TDM, and Race/Run. I need one judge from each category, and I plan on judging CTF. Chi11y, are you interested in judging? You seem like a good player and mapper.

I need to figure out something to put here.

Re: Map Contest

Okay: the rules big_smile.

Ground Rules
- All maps must be under 1.5 Mb.
- No profanity or inappropriate images in maps.
- All words must have been translated to English or German.
- Maps must be submitted by the deadline; no late maps will be accepted for judging.

Contest Rules
- Categories
— Race will include races, runs, flyraces, hpraces, and dummydrags. Races will not be judged unless one of the judges can beat them.
— DM will included DMs and TDMs. These will be judged for graphics as well as playability, so try to make you DM maps shine. DM maps will not be judged if there are no team-spawnpoints for TDM matches.
— CTF includes all traditional CTF games. If a new player cannot be expected to get from one team's flag to another due to in-map hazards, than the map would be considered a flyrace, not a CTF. Like DM, judges for CTF will have graphics in mind.

- Deadlines and submission
— You can start a map whenever you want, but it must be finished by the deadline.
— The deadline is (Not set yet).
— Maps cannot be posted for critique; contestants will be disqualified if this is found out about. In addition, no special images from the map may be released before the contest ends.
— All maps submitted will be posted up for downloads on (Not set yet).
— Please post your map on the (Not set yet) thread to enter.
— You may only submit one map to each category

Judging
- Judges
— Race: (Not set yet)
— DM: (Not set yet)
— CTF: Me!

- Scoring
— Maps will be judged by three criteria: difficulty, playability, and graphics.
— Judges will score each of these elements on a scale of one to ten.
— The map with the highest average in each category will win.
— If there is a tie, a tie-breaker judge will be selected from the community to decide the winner arbitrarily.

- What will score points
— Maps that can be played by more people are important, so no race maps that cannot be beat by people who have a higher ping than 50.
— DM and CTF Maps made only for certain mods, such as instagib, will likely not win.
— Good gameplay is the key criterium; you will need to create a fun map to get points.
— Keep in mind that graphics will earn brownie points.

Volunteering
- I am still looking for judges, so if you have some time, feel free to volunteer.

- What you need
— You need to have played Teeworlds for more than three months, and you need to at least have made one map.
— You need to be a decent player in order to beat some of the race maps.
— You will need to have a good knowledge of the map editor.

- Joining
— There are two vacant positions: DM and Race. If you are low on mapping skills but a good player, you should volunteer for Race. If you are vice versa, you should try DM.
— The deadline for volunteering is July 1st.
— You cannot join if you have submitted a map in the contest.

So that's it! As you can see, I am still sketching out the details. I will post some more when some people volunteer.

I need to figure out something to put here.

Re: Map Contest

I am volunteer, i can judge CTF and Race maps.
I am also good at graphism so si can judge the design of the map.
I play since 0.4.2 (november 2008) and i know what is a good map for its gameplay.
I made some Race/Hprace/CTF maps.

And i think you must have more than 3 judges, to have the most objective final judgement as you can.

Re: Map Contest

@lordskelethom: You're on the list for potential judges. As for having more judges, it's a good idea but I don't know if there are enough willing volunteers.

I need to figure out something to put here.

Re: Map Contest

Very good big_smile I wanna be a judge but make a map too! lol I can judge race maps mostly ive played teeworlds for about 2 years and i guess im a good player smile And i can build basic maps.

Bye.

14

Re: Map Contest

Pff I think the judges should know what quality is and should be able to make quality maps too, otherwise lolkid maps like lost or pirates would win. I would suggest chilly as a judge, and if the judges are allowed to take part, I would be a volunteer too because I have really much experience concerning playing teeworlds and making maps. Btw, will there be a winner map in each category or is there just one map which can win?

Re: Map Contest

i can do for DM as i really hate it, if the map is good then i will like it even if its dm one.
thats what i think counts more.

Peace.

Re: Map Contest

a competition would be great but lordskelethom is right. There must be more judges than one for each cathegory.

i think there will be a winner map in each category because you cant really say that a ctf-map is better than a race-map. hmm

nice idea and please choose good judges wink

Re: Map Contest

It seems a bit contradictionary to disallow maps for mods yet do accept race maps. There's a good chance that there are very good mod map creators out there who make great maps but are now denied participation rights.

Considering the number of mod players in Teeworlds (equal or larger then the traditional game modes) it would only be fair if this major group would also have a chance to participate. This group will probably also be more then happy to judge their category as many have a very good feeling for what makes or breaks a particular map. As the main criteria is gameplay this could also very well apply to certain mods which are very popular exactly because of the quality gameplay experience they offer.

Good point; I revised it to only apply to DM and CTF maps.

@Ray-bert: It seems like you may be right. So far my volunteers are Stephanator, lordskelethom, and dinosmoothie.
@dinosmoothie: Sorry, I don't think it would be fair if you entered a map and judged it. Though you might have someone else judge your map.
@Franchan: I don't know what the prize is. It depends whether someone will be willing to donate a server. I am working on some teeskins and gameskins if this is not the case. I'm also hoping for a special title for the winner, but this requires the cooperation of the mods.

As for everyone else, if you want more judges, we need more judges. Please volunteer if you feel you fit the requirements, and if anyone you know does, ask them. The same goes for entering in the contest.

I need to figure out something to put here.

One in each category please. That way, you can only get one prize for each category (so the maximum amount of people can get prizes).

I need to figure out something to put here.

Re: Map Contest

Ok can i judge race maps then?

Bye.

24

Re: Map Contest

That sounds pretty lame. Makes winning worth less since maybe someone else have made a better racemap than yours, but they are on the CTF tournament, so you'll win the racemaptournament even if you know you aren't the best.

Re: Map Contest

I think that everybody can make a map for each category. Maybe there are some mappers who are skilled in more than one category wink

I have some suggestions about which ppl shoud juge the maps. I woulds say only pro ppl should juge the maps...

ctf: chi1 (made the most official tw maps), Stephanator (won the TeeTV map contest)
dm/tdm: chi1, Stephanator
race: Sushi Tee (Its me xD)
hprace: Sushi Tee, Stephanator, lordskelethom (at least its his mod and he is a pro there, too)
