Topic: Teeworlds on Steam?

I have the idea to provide Teeworlds on Steam. ^^

It could be a good chance to get a lot of users.
Yes, you can provide games etc. for free on Steam.

What du you think about this?

Well, look at other games with thousands of bugs, they never will get finished.

You can provide the updates too, Steam will update it on the clients automaticly. ;>

It would be a very good a secondary way of offering the Teeworlds content, as long as it would never become the priority way of delivering new releases. Such a single, centralized way of content delivering would limit the possibilities for custom content releases.

As much as there's to say in favor of Steam, there is just as much against it. It a commercial software product after all, and I doubt they'll host Teeworlds without needing some financial input from the developers. Next to this there are several aspects which make it incompatible with the nature of the existing Teeworlds (no Linux support, forced auto-updating, requirement for authentication).

It could certainly be a good marketing tool, but the developers would really need to look at the up- and downsides of a cooperation between an open source game and a commercial service.

The devs dont need to pay anythink!

On Steam you can release games etc. for free, I mean its named "Steamworks".

I don't know it 100% but I think I readed about this.

This would make the game VERY popular.

And it makes teeworlds more user- and communityfriendly: It would be easier to find your (internet-)friends and there's also a clansystem. (+accounts, privat chat, ingame webbrowser, automatic updates).

The only con is, that Teeworlds could get TOO popular and valve gets interested in buying the game. We would have to pay 10 euros/10dollars.

(Just btw, I would buy the game instantly.)

Maybe they want, but they can't if the devs dont want. ^^

I think if Teeworlds gets pupular it would be very very nice!

I Use Steam.
I Hardly Ever Buy my games from the store now.
Steam is one of the most Brilliant Things Ever.

I was just thinking about this the other day as well..however,

The only way it would have a point is if it was included commercially (or if steam bought it, to provide it free for their customer base [hahahaha...yeah]), otherwise - it really wouldn't get much gas on the popularity anyways, and would gain limitations.

You can't just add a game to steam and have all the bells and whistles that the commercial products on there have. I may be wrong, but as far as I know, the 'steam updater' is only for commercial games.

Long-term steam users (back from WON) would know how ugly valve is, and sees them in their true colors. They are not a respectable company - they are drastically greedy for the extra dollar and provide a huge lack in professionalism and support. I say this because, due to that 'greed', they probobly wouldn't accept teeworlds commercially since it is/was open source - they wouldn't have enough control over the product.

Just my two cents - I know a couple people who have had their product accepted into the steam listings. I don't think steam is the way to go. Up to the devs!

I never used Steam but as it's windows-only I deny this idea. I'm using a Mac. And Teeworlds is one of the games MUST BE FOR EVERY AFFORD a Crossplattform-game for all time! Don't put it on Steam. U won't lose that much of players but u will lose Mac and Linux-Users which is sad. and u would lose me. that is sad for me. big_smile hmm

There are some unofficial versions available but this would be far from the ideal situation. I think this is one of the reason why the developers should really think if it would be for the good or bad to take interest in this commercial application.

It's possible that you can use Teeworlds on Steam like other Steamgames, but you willn't loose linux and mac users, they can use the normal version.
The windows version can stay like it is, but for more people you can provide it in steam who connect to the same masters etc.

All in all it's the same, but with a wider count of users.
You don't take anythink what is bad.

Yeah, aede is right. steam is a gaming platform and games provided under steam can be played without steam aswell if you allow it smile

I TOTALLY DISAGREE with this idea.
Why ? Because I think it's just a waste of the memory usage and maybe -space.

We (or just I) don't need extra Steam support, this game is already good enough supported.

The annoying part of this also is: you MUST have Steam running. And go the hell away with the messages that popups suddenly ingame... Bleh.

Steam would be an option, not an obligation... for example quake 3 arena. can be played either with or without steam...

you DONT NEED TO USE STEAM even if teeworld is provided under it aswell

Nah. steam is horrible. unless you can put it on steam but when you download it, it can be exactly the same as the one on this site (no modifications for steam). and it is an option to play it in steam. anyways, i own a mac so i dont like the idea of steam. (if it slows down development its even worse.)

It would also create 2 separate communities where both developers and mods would have to invest their time in. Steam wouldn't allow multiple version which would be strange considering 50% still plays 0.4.3. I think that the main problem is that Teeworlds would have too choose between either Steam or the existing way. Both would be impossible to maintain and tear the community a part.
