We should be able to do this, so typing players won't stay defenseless.
Or just have a safeguard when typing.
Ahah!
Maybe enemy should die instantly when attacking an typing player?
^_^
/agree with 101kl, a safeguard should be better because sometimes we shot at typing players without seeing theyr typing...but then, imagine u are in a bad situation, somebody took a katana and u are next to him...so u enter chat and become invincible ? na,it's a bad idea to me. Suppose that the dev team already thougt about that... so we have to count on fair play of other players.
Can be usefull if other players will not can shoot at typing players, but i dont like the original idea of this topic - because its next spam type. You will chat and wait for the tee with flag, and you will kill him. NO NO and NO
This wont happen. Either don't write, or join spectators to write. It shouldn't affect the other players.
Agree, Teeworlds is not a chat client, if you really need to talk to someone, use any of the many chat programs in existence. If you really need to use Teeworlds for chat, don't expect any advantages.
You decide you want to type while ingame, then you decide to give up all offensive and defensive powers. If you don't like it, don't chat or use the spectator function.
Too much chatting only disrupts the real gameplay most people want to experience.
How about typing between death and spawn? -> option, if you want to auto-spawn or not. At the moment we either can play or we can chat. If there were an option for auto-spawn, we could chat in-between. And the problem with afk-players that are constantly dying without fighting would be gone with an auto-spawn option. What do you think of the idea?
If you type between kill and spawn, it doesn't "disrupt the real gameplay". You died anyway which is a (necessary) interruption.
Teeworlds is not a chat client
Oh, you commented that part in the source code out?
Typing between dieing and spawning could work, but no auto-spawn also raises a couple of problems. What if players decide to not spawn at all, will they remain in the game and keep other players from joining? I think it's better to keep the auto-spawn, but make it a bit longer so people who want to chat can chat, but those that don't want to can spawn faster by clicking.
But I still think that there is no serious problem here. If you want to chat, go to spectator and chat all you want. If you want to play, join the game and play. You just have to choose if you want to sacrifice your score for some social networking. If you really need to say something, just say it and accept it might cost you a few seconds of gameplay. If you really don't want to lose the few points you might score simply don't type.
Oh, you commented that part in the source code out?
Teeworlds is a game, which means it's first purpose is to provide an experience which you can play. Yes it offers chat as well, but it's not what it's build for. Teeworlds is not a chat program which offers a funny minigame as well. Chat in Teeworlds is an optional service which gives you the ability to interact with other tees on a basic level. There is no valid reason whatsoever that this service needs to change, especially not to support those players that use it for more then just basic interaction.
There are way too many people that have the impression that it's the mistake of other players to kill a typing tee. The fact is that these tees decide to start typing, and therefor nothing changes but that they can't defend themselves anymore. They are still an enemy target though, and especially if they carry the flag have no right to survive any longer then they normally would. I'm not saying any tee that is typing must be killed, it's nice if you allow them to finish their chat. But it gives them in no way the privilege of invulnerability they are still the same hostile tee, typing or not typing.
People that type more then necessary only mess up the screen, don't offer any gameplay and tend to use chat as a way for not using Teeworlds for what it's meant to be used (that is offering a game experience). To discuss changes which only affect people that don't use Teeworlds the way it's meant to be used can never be a developers priority.

.......
I Know What you mean... i wouldn't want the Protection ether.
Only reason i said that is because is the first idea is quite Stupid and wouldn't work.
I'd like hat so ppl can give orders to newbs to stay in defense or atack.
Well in that case you can bind certain commands to certain hotkeys and use them all you want without having to type a single word. To do this you can use this command in the F1 menu:
bind q "say Attack!"
Now pressing q will result in the tee saying "Attack!" without the need to chat or lose a single second of gameplay. This can be done for all sort of messages.
I think this idea is just totaly useless if you wanna chat go hide or join spec and if you get killed while chatting dont cry like a baby with saying: "[TEENAME] CHATKILLER!".
I find chatkilling annoying, but I usually type in places with no enemies, or I hotkey messages such as "xD" and "Incoming at our base!".
Typing between dieing and spawning could work, but no auto-spawn also raises a couple of problems. What if players decide to not spawn at all, will they remain in the game and keep other players from joining? [...] If you want to chat, go to spectator and chat all you want.
You are contradiciting yourself.
Comparison of the two solutions:
Chatting as spectators: Usually no chat, except for the lame guy who joined spectators and is "chatting all he wants". He occupies a slot which a player could take.
Chatting between death and spawn: Every tee has the chance to say something and some will type a senctence after a kill. But there's no need to stay out of game, because you can rejoin immediatly.
If you dont like the solution with the auto-spawn option you could extend the time between death and spawn to 5 seconds or so. If you want to join earilier you could do that with pressing fire for example.
Teeworlds is not a chat program which offers a funny minigame as well.
Nobody said it were. But it has a chat functionality. And saying you shouldnt improve the chat because the main purpose of teeworlds is playing isnt a valid point. Nevertheless the gameplay has a much higher priority in the development.
People that type more then necessary only mess up the screen, don't offer any gameplay and tend to use chat as a way for not using Teeworlds for what it's meant to be used (that is offering a game experience). Well, that's just polemic BS. You know there are players who also want to socialize and not just play? And please notice the "also" and "not just". Teeworlds is a multiplayer game. I dont want to play with poeple who cant show any personality because Azon dont want anybody to "mess up his screen". You should really think about commenting the chat part out of the source code.
The real problem here is that people get upset if they get chatkilled. If I stop to chat, I am aware that I am risking my life while i am chatting, simple as that. I see no problem here at all. If u want to chat, just do it ... but then again, dont start crying that u got chatkilled.
Simply put, Teeworlds "vanilla" must remain the same base for all games. In 1vs1, refusing to respawn when leading could allow timelimit victory. So this could work for other gametypes only, and making exceptions is bad game design. People should know what to expect.
Shooting while typing is a problem for people who have the fire bind on their keyboard and not on their mouse.
I think the current state is the best compromise.
If you dont like the solution with the auto-spawn option you could extend the time between death and spawn to 5 seconds or so. If you want to join earilier you could do that with pressing fire for example.
Just like I said in previous post:
I think it's better to keep the auto-spawn, but make it a bit longer so people who want to chat can chat, but those that don't want to can spawn faster by clicking.

I hope you understand that I'm not opposed to chatting during gameplay, but I'm opposed to spending development resources on something that has never been a problem in the first place. If you have the need to socialize then please do, I do so myself and I know many others do as well. But to ask for any sort of compensation when you want to chat instead of play, while it's perfectly fine to either accept you lose some seconds or can join spectator is just an irrelevant request.
The system will stay as it is.
Being able to shoot when you chat will only provoke people even more to shoot people who chat. If you chat, be ready to get killed and don't get pissed by it. Chatting is not a defense.
xD yes i know many ppl who are using chatting as defence even now
How about havind team commands like in CS?
For ppl who dont understand bindings.
