Topic: After installing a new internet, the game didn't work properly anymore

I only bought a new modem and installed it. Before i had a very low ping and it worked properly, but now the ping is always higher than 700. If I'm surfing the net, the internet is as fast as before!! I looked in the taskmanager and found out that the processor is working to full capacity, if i run the game!
What should i do. Causes the modem is problem?
(Windows XP, 900MHZ, 384 mb RAM und 64 mb graphic card)
Hope you can help me?

If it's connected via USB Cable, the Modem could be the one causing the problem. When using Ethernet, it's not the modem.
