Topic: Game is a Showstopper on Ubuntu Hardy

A couple of times now the game just went back to the desktop environment (Gnome, in my case) without warning. From there I could not click anything on the desktop, like if it was just a photo. The only thing that would work was Alt+Tab, but it refused to bring me back to the game.
As far as I remember, the only program always running aside from Teeworlds was Firefox.

Is that a known problem already? Do you think I should post it at launchpad? With what package?

Most importantly though: Does anyone know how to fix this?

(Ctrl + Alt + Backspace was the only thing that worked so far. Killing teeworlds (via a new console) still left me with a confusingly high processor loads from compiz, ff and some daemons running. The loads were above 80% at one time according to top.)

wineserver? Are you running the windows teeworlds on linux through wine instead of using the linux binaries? o_O

Sorry, my mistake. Nevermind that comment about wine. That was something entirely different and did not belong here. (I edited my post as well, so others won't be confused.)

I am using the linux x_86 binaries (just the normal download of 0.43), so the rest I reported in my post is still valid.

There is some problems with the screensaver sometimes, try searching the forums about this.

Re: Game is a Showstopper on Ubuntu Hardy

Ok, it seemed to have been the screensaver. I turned it off and it worked for 2 straight hours. I also found a launchpad bug that mentioned teeworlds in connection with the screensaver, so I guess something will be done there.

Thanks for the help.

I read in several forums that people have problems with games in conjuction with a screensaver on Ubuntu. I'm not really sure how to find and fix this problem
a) I cannot reproduce this on my system (non-ubuntu)
b) afaik its not only teeworlds-related
c) Maybe its an issue with Ubuntu itself

So the best workaround atm is to deactive the X11-screensaver (btw: I wonder why screensavers are still needed in a world of TFTs ;-) )

The crucial thing for gamers is turning compiz off before playing. It leaves Teeworlds more memory to use, so crashes and low performance are less likely. Search for compiz-switch in Synaptic to turn off compiz with one simple click.

Re: Game is a Showstopper on Ubuntu Hardy

It looks like MPlayer and maybe a few other packages have some of these problems too, MPlayer reports a screen saver problem on starting it up. I don't know about X or Gnome screen savers but is it possible to run a shell script with Tee Worlds to switch it off temporarily?

Does disabling Compiz really help much?
Edit: Yes it does! I recommend trying disabling Compiz.
