I actually didn't know or expect this. There is a small Japanese community but ever since the Steam release, Japanese players just exploded and all Japanese servers (three of them) were all full.
I think this merits for a call to add Japanese font into the game. My understanding of the downsides (there was a discussion on adding Chinese) is that there is a possibility of being slower boot up time and larger memory usage.
Huh, really? I haven't noticed that at all. I haven't seen any asian server either. Maybe I missed something there or am not online at the right hours.

Maybe Asian community increased not only japenese I was talking about.
I have to agree with amulus, what I saw were servers full of Chinese players! 
I already knew there was a decent sized Chinese community, but I had no clue there was a Japanese community!
Perhaps it will become even larger 
Teeworlds is gaining momentum.
