You should be able to download the update through the Ubuntu Software Center. I just check the teeworlds package and it seems to be version 0.6.2 (as of 24.11.2013).

Have you tried turning of gfx_asyncrender?

Which version of Mac OS X are you running? I don't have any problems on 10.9 and I did not have any on 10.7.
