Topic: WTF emotion drives me crazy...

Hello. I know this has been mentioned before but it hasn't been mentioned recently. Ever since 0.6 the emotion icons have been updated, some added, some removed. The WTF emotion SHOULD be removed. It artificially makes the game T-rated when it is clearly E-rated. Considering most free software multiplayer games have blood and gore and all sorts of family unfriendly things, I think that removing that particular symbol from the game would be a great improvement. I'm not saying to remove the chat or anything like that. You aren't responsible for what others say in the game (though a chat filter would also be nice). However, you DO have control of what you put in the game. So why don't you remove the WTF emotion from the game?

Re: WTF emotion drives me crazy...

I think it would be T-rated anyway because of non-censored internet chat. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Re: WTF emotion drives me crazy...

under that logic ALL network games would be at least T-rated because of "non-censored internet chat". Where I live, where the ESRB is used for commercial games, games that support online multiplayer would usually have a "Game Experience May Change During Online Play" disclaimer. In other words, neither the rating company nor the game's creator are responsible for whatever mods and foul language people use for the game. People may swear in the in game chat, but that isn't caused by the game's makers. gaming companies ARE responsible for any foul content THEY put in. 0.5 Trunk and lower would have been rated E.

Well, I believe that is the case.

Re: WTF emotion drives me crazy...

Interesting approach, never thought about that.
But somehow you are right, because this symbol can be easily exchanged with others already present.
So I support the idea.

On the other hand, the rating is self chosen by manufacturers normally? It does not meant a lot I guess. Anyway, this could be changed without a significant loss in my opinion.

Re: WTF emotion drives me crazy...

One more comment I have to make. You are assuming that everybody playing the game is doing so by the master server. Lets pretend that a church or daycare decides to have a LAN party for the kids there. Lets also pretend that the church and/or daycare follows Free Software values. Assuming that they want to use a game which is completely FOSS, there are only a couple of choices for LAN. Because of the WTF emotion, Teeworlds won't be one of them. If the group decides to edit the emotions graphic file but not edit the code, then although the game will be clean for them, the kids might want to download the game for themselves. When they play the game they will notice the WTF symbol and wonder what it means. Their innocence is lost shortly after...

The only other alternative to avoid this situation would be to use 0.5 trunk or lower, and encourage the kids to do the same instead of using the newer 0.61 . I would rather the game be completely clean so that private servers and LANs who don't want to play family unfriendly games can be happy, rather then try to appease those who swear every 5 seconds. Again, I'm not saying that they shouldn't be forbidden from swearing completely, as I don't want to rule the lives of everybody. However, people with that mindset have a whole lot more choices to play with. Those who believe in FOSS values AND want to be family friendly have a hard time finding games that they can play with on multiplayer. Try to think of those people for a moment, rather then those who have more choices and reduce the choices of those who don't think like they do.

One more thing. Although I don't want to stop free speech, I don't mind having server and client side chat filters for people who want to host profanity free servers. Since the server side chat filter isn't required, those who want to swear in servers with like minded friends can do so. The client side chat filter would be for people who want to (or have to depending on server population count) join those servers without being exposed to the bad language. Again, the filters would be optional.

Re: WTF emotion drives me crazy...

I understand your concern about the WTF emotion but, despite what that article says about the MPAA and their standards (I've always thought they've been kind of off about their rating standards...), your argument doesn't make sense. W.T.F. is an acronym that is ambiguous if the person doesn't already know what it means, and, if they do know what it means, I think we can safely assume they won't be demoralized by another player using it offhandedly while in game. There are much worse things someone could do other than that, which I don't care to mention...

However, if anything I think it could be questioned into removal because it's English. Teeworlds is an international game and I think it's kind of only fair to use emotions without a specific language attached to it, or at least, ideally.

[edit]
The type of values you're trying to keep are kept by far and few in between in this world, but I commend you for it, since I consider myself a Christian too. However, to be honest, those values are fairly unrealistic. I can understand wanting to protect children but they and their parents will have to come to the reality that this world is a messy place, filled with those we rather not be around. It's unfortunate but true. If something like the WTF emotion can demoralized their childhood innocence then their parents have done them a disservice to them by making them so morally week... It's just life man, unless they plan on being Amish. :\

And on the whole chat filter thing, it has been discussed before here under "Community features", and it will not be implemented for two main reasons. One, most people don't care that much; players are able to mute other player if they want to if their language is bothering them. And two, those chat filters are easy to get around and are therefore, pretty pointless. I've seen chat filters implemented before and if someone really wanted to give someone else a piece of their mind, they were going to do it... and do it creatively.

Re: WTF emotion drives me crazy...

I read the whole thing, but want to address this:

I don't believe much people here do this assumption. Teeworlds is easy to configure for and widely played in LANs.

Also, to answer to your examples, it's very easy to modify the game to remove this WTF emoticon. Just edit the .png file where the WTF icon is drawn and replace it with whatever (blank if so you desire). But I bet you'll find about 50 obscenes words in the chat before you get to see a WTF icon (hopefully half will be german :D).

Re: WTF emotion drives me crazy...

It's so easy to replace it locally I don't see the problem.

11

Re: WTF emotion drives me crazy...

I just prefer things controlled server side, that's all

12

Re: WTF emotion drives me crazy...

i think every kid knows what WTF is and its not that bad in my opinion
U can find porn easyier then making the emote

13

Re: WTF emotion drives me crazy...

<sarcasm> The #!!*#*! emote stands for a bad word, it should be removed as well. Kids will wonder what that means and look up bad words! Please remove it. The Devil emote is a sign of the devil! I will not allow my kids to play games of the devil. Please remove this one as well. The Heart emote encourages love, it will lead to kids and teens having sex. Please remove it as it pertains to abstinence. Thank you. smile </sarcasm>

Re: WTF emotion drives me crazy...

make 2 versions of tw:

one: +0

and the other one: +12

^^

And on the other way, i don't think that this stupid emote, will make the kids bad or violent. So this is just a stupid thread and it's annoying for the whole tw community.

15

Re: WTF emotion drives me crazy...

Fun fact: I'm using sushi's client pack with disabled emotions, coz all are annoying in general tongue

but
.....
seriously?
.....

oh, and we should remove also all weapons, they are cruel.

OH, yes you're right. I forgot that weapons of tw makes children criminal and that they deal with drugs in later age because of teeworlds. How could we been so blind? Teeworlds should be only allowed at an age of 18+

Re: WTF emotion drives me crazy...

If you want strict morality regulations, go for proprietary, commercial games. FOSS is a lost case in this matter. Commercial proprietary developers actually HAVE to care about morality because of regulations, rating systems and need to sell games to the most people possible, while FOSS game developers don't have such obligations and can do whatever they want.

The good thing is that you can fix a FOSS game yourself (as people suggested), that's what free software is for, but you can't force developers to apply your fixes to the original game.

Re: WTF emotion drives me crazy...

Some other people didn't like WTF for other reasons but it's not going to change.

https://github.com/teeworlds/teeworlds/issues/625

A swear filter would be nice feature to have imo.

Re: WTF emotion drives me crazy...

@danfun64: you might be a happy person, if you care about such small problems.
Teeworlds has many other problems, which are more important, than E-rate.
