Topic: 0.4.0

The long anticipated 0.4.0 is here, and now all I can read in the forum is random whine! sad

That is why I start this thread, so people can sum up there discontent, short and objective.

The only thing that I don't like about it is the increase in gamespeed.
Also, I think the skin for the new weapon is a bit dull, but that is minor.

Used to be very active waay back

Re: 0.4.0

heya,
well about the new weapong skin. I think I might agree with you there actually. I think the weapon looks cool, problem is it doesnt look that good while picked up. anyways, I'm probably gonna revisit the graphics for it.

Re: 0.4.0

i suggest the option to turn off the graphic effects cause some are really useless like the black feets when double jump is used

Re: 0.4.0

Ok so my 5 cents (yeah ima whiney lil boy, deal with it (no ban plox) lulz)

- The skidding is annoying soundwise and overall not really usefull, my movement stutters when that happens and i overall kinda dislike it (yeah yeah, cause im not used to it .... i know that answer)

- Black feet is just fugly, i dont have anything against it really besides the fact that its ugly (minor annoyance) please make optional, even with possible gfx update

- the laser rifle is cool but i suggest
a) that you see the end behind your tee (cause its a more or less long rifle)
b) that its moved a lil bit cause now you see those "edges" in right in front of the tee

http://www5.picfront.org/picture/IP7pGZw2Ib/img/edges.PNG

and it looks a lil like a you would be holding a fish ^^

+ i like the new missle animations - you see what you hit (but you should be able to make them smaller
+ the grenade flight path is straighter
+ nice new look (map wise)

edit:
- the pistol gfx now looks a lil bad compared to the better, other gfxs maybe the pistol could be restyled

- the laser "beam" is pixelated
(hijacked from keka http://rajhshanks.free.fr/screenshot0011.png)

Re: 0.4.0

Is this game being cut back to a casual game for bored World of Warcraft players? Was 0.3 just an accidental gameplay hit on the way to the mysterious "vision" the developers claim to have?

- CPU performance is worse. I had no problems on 0.3, now it's just sluggish, unstable. It's not only fps, it's cpu related stuff like delayed input, certain quirky jumps in movement. Unstable, unplayable. And inexcusable considering the simple graphics. (AthlonXP 1.4Ghz*, Radeon 9250 128MB, 512MB DDR RAM).*
* side note: that configuration is just right for every task, its smart&silent and does not eat much electrical power. i can even play hitman2 i high quality, so dont tell me to upgrade my pc if you're not able to reduce the bloat of you bloated Windows.

- the changes to the hook in terms of force and strafe-abily destroy part of the fun for me. and they are quite unnatural, as if running and swinging speed weren't related in the same linear way anymore. It's just adhereance to noobs (the loud majority of these forums, they write that much because they are used to writing much nonsense from their moorpgs and guilds) who envy the speed and skill of that bunch of really good (CTF) players I had the honour to measure myself with in the past weeks.

- the laser is just pointless in a fast game like teewars.

- the new ballistic arch of the nade launcher takes away much of the tactical use and tranquil beauty. now it's just a generic, unthoughful weapon like the ones in Soldat.

- the old elegant cloudy particle effects were just right (for indicating gameplay aspects in a non ugly way). the new effects are just bloated distracting, they add nothing but take away performance and calmness.

- why are the map backgrounds colour fades in low quality? why has the plain and natural light blue background of CTF2 turned into that darkish, undefinable brown-fade, reducing onscreen neutrality, worsening performance?

So pretty please re-release 0.3.4 souce code under a more liberal license so someone can fix the security issues in a pro gaming fork. see you there. hmm

Re: 0.4.0

Right off the bat, I didn't like this version of Teewars. I had to re-do all my settings, including switching back from fullscreen mode to windowed mode. I HATE fullscreen mode. The font sizes are incorrect; they don't work in the tabs properly, the first pop-up window you get when you load doesn't display the text correctly...

Shortly after realizing that none of my settings were going to be the same, I quit the application. 0.3.4 was far superior to 0.4.0, hands down.

And what the hell is up with the weird Unix execs instead of a nice Teewars app on the Mac?

If you were trying to hit the March 22nd date, you did it, but you did it at the expense of everything that was good about Teewars (World?). Please please please fix these issues and re-release this. I don't want to see Teeworlds fall into the same pit of general ugliness that plagues nearly every other free, open source application.

Re: 0.4.0

Personally, I like the graphical update, and I think that the new version seems faster. I also think the remote console is vastly improved.

I still prefer the old weapons to the laser, but then I guess I'm just not used to it. The only real issue that I have with the new version is that the tees seem to run a bit too fast, and I don't really like the skidding, but then again in a few weeks time tees in 0.3.4 will seem sluggish. tongue

There's just a few issues like the weapon switching that need to be addressed, and a bit of polishing to be applied, and then it will be great!

You need to redo the settings because we changed basicly changed the whole input and console system. And yes, It better now but there are bugs however that will get fixed.

About the exec stuff. There is a bug with OSX 10.5 and fullscreen that we don't have a solution for. We did is this way to get around the problem for now. When we do find a solution, we will bundle the application again.

I would gladly fix this issue but kinda hard without doing profiling. Profiling on a machine that spits out frames at 300+ gets kinda useless. Does the performance differ much between a resolution like 640x480 and 800x600? and 1024x768?

13

Re: 0.4.0

Nope it doesn't. It's quite unstable and sluggish for me in all resolutions and settings. I got a quite slim Windows with no background processes and services. Performance was kinda like this when I played 0.3 in High Quality.

A technical answer to this (since I'm responsible for the change smile:

We had two long standing bugs on OSX: Mouse input not working on 10.5.2 in fullscreen and no easy way to start a server. Doing things this way (two CLI apps) is a bit ugly, yes I know. But it allows us to atleast have a working version. You can live with that Terminal.app that start, can you not? smile

I will try to figure out this bug, but right now it looks like I need to do major reimplementation of the low lever graphics and input layer in the library we are using (GLFW).

Languages shapes the way we think, or don't.

Re: 0.4.0

Apart from that this version feels very different there are a few things I would like to point out.

In the mac version, the game isn't a .app but a "unix körbar-fil" (don't know the english word). This wouldn't bother me if the terminal widows closed after finished session, but no. it is still there and I have to press the red ball, and close terminal that appears in the dock tongue

And i still believe that it is a little too hard to chase the flag carrier in ctf2. Is there a way to make the carrier slower or have some kind of movement or action penality so it makes players work as a team to protect the carrier?

Anyway, really like the new menu (where you search for internet games), it looks great!
// Jonas

EDIT: Damn, a little too late, nevermind the mac question..

Re: 0.4.0

1.Haven't found anything on trac about it so here it is:
http://www1.picfront.org/picture/v4TBMhgYYa/img/strange.png

2.It would be great to have a statusbar while downloading a map.
In addition change KiB to KB or Kbyte please.
(I know, the official symbol is KiB but in 90% of all cases it is written KB or KByte wink )

I never had any problems chasing the carrier. Those without uber skills* could use their intelligence and wait for the carrier on certain strategic junctions while I try to push the carrier out of his base. A semi-transparent, hotkey-switchable minimap with indication of friendlies and perhaps the enemy carrier would be more helpfull in terms of team work than buffing the unique movement of this game even more.

Maybe it is so that I'm not good enough to chase carriers, but anyway smile

I don't think that a minimap is the way to go.. it makes the game "too complex", mybe just a simple arrow that points in the enemys flag carriers position? Or maybe too if we want to find our own to help out?

I see. This makes me feel a lot better, and I apologize for being so... vehement about my complaints. It's just that when everything has changed -- and not for the apparent better -- I start to freak out.

I'm still unhappy with the arc of the rocket, the new particle effects, and the speed of the hook. There was nothing wrong with any of the previous ones -- in fact, I think they old ones were far superior. I want my hook speed back.

0.4.1 is a really good upgrade, but I think the next one should revert some of these changes.

Didn't make it into 0.4.0. Perhaps a later update.

23

Re: 0.4.0

the game is still great but I think its now a bit too fast and roping is too easy. what exactly did you change about it?

Re: 0.4.0

Introduced something called a velocity ramp that makes it harder to gather really high velocity

IMO: the game's velocity is almost the same but its hard to increase ur speed as in 0.3.4 and this velocity ramp make some cap on hook boosting (its only my feeling of the game, not code anylazing)

25

Re: 0.4.0

The velocity ramping actually doesn't have all that much effect. Airen's theory is that because the walking speed has increased, the boosts you get from using the hook are less significant, even though you aren't any slower than you were in 0.3.4. Playing around in the debug mode is a good way of making sure, but I haven't had the time to do that yet myself.

I'd say the above is only one part of where the feeling of change comes from. The other part could be the slight increase in the camera distance.
