Topic: Random map generation?

Hi,

something I have like about the game "worms" very much was that there have been several themes (designs) for maps and the game has been able to create random maps. For those who do not know the game: You chose a theme for the next game and a new map has been created automatically. That way you never played on the same map as before (but I think you could save maps that you liked very much).

I understand that creating a map for worms is much easier than for teewars as worms simply stood on the ground or on platforms but there was no need for platforms that were placed so that you can jump on them or shoot a hook into. Nonetheless, the worms maps have been similar to teewars: It was possible to create hollows (everything is surrounded by walls) and there have been platforms and the players could be placed in a balanced way.

Despite all the potential difficulties, I think that it is possible to have something like an map generator for random maps.

What do you think? Would this be a nice feature or do you prefer maps that have been created manually?

Re: Random map generation?

hmm....it is possible, but not yet.in a few days version 4.0 will be released.
the random-map would have to be sended to all other players on the server. And this is just possible in 4.0

Re: Random map generation?

Random maps would be interesting. They'd make each game different, and nobody would be disadvantaged for being unfamiliar with a map.
However, hand made maps are usually crafted so that they will be fun, and so that there will be specific choke points etc.
Since we can't blow up the terrain like in worms, it may be quite difficult to create random maps that are playable.

Random maps kinda would make the game completely different.
Right now, players can be more skilled on some maps, myself I like some maps more than others. With the random maps-thingy the thing gets screwed up and lots of funny moments will disappear.

Re: Random map generation?

IMO: its like random map generation in HOMM2-5... maps made in such way is hard to play (no ballance etc.)

Yes, the worms maps also have been unbalanced very often. I remember games when my 4 worms have been placed close to eachother and close to the edge of a platform. The first rocket killed 1 worm and the explosion threw 2 more worms into the water. That wasn't fair, but it was fun though (at least for the player who shot the rocket). The next day it was my turn that killed 3 worms with a single shot bcause the worms had been place not so well for my opponent. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. :-)

No, no, no. It's not the maps that aren't balanced, it's the random placement. The most skillful schemes on Worms are played on random maps, but with manual worm placement enabled, Elite being one of them. It's the most popular league scheme and is in absolutely perfect balance.

Generating maps would be fun to experiment with in Teewars, but as others have pointed out, the generator would have to be tuned very precisely to spew out decent maps. And even then they wouldn't play as well as the best custom ones do. But still probably better than most maps down there in the Maps forum. wink

Not something I believe the developers should focus on right now, though.
