Topic: [MAP] ctf_hook[W-S]

Hi everyone !

Me & my friends often play on "ctf_space" map with the instagib mod. But, this map is becoming boring... So I thought it would be fun to create a map.

So here it is, my first map, after a few hours of learning. I kept the "hook & move or you gonna die" 'cause I love it. But I changed it in a slighty more difficult way.

Gametype : CTF (so iCTF) & DM.

Here some screens:

Please tell me what you think about it, I repeat that it is my first map.

Hello,

I feel like you just placed random one-tile blocks in the map, and performed some small fixes, adding flag respawn points and pickup everywhere you can.

Seriously, Teeworlds is NOT qaudratic. Teeworlds is about curves, teeishness. Do never map just drawing a quad and then trying to fill it with everything you can. You need to think to your map with a pencil and some paper. Indeed, that may look stupid, but this is the right way to start: turn off your PC, and draw your map on a paper. I don't tell you to draw nice pictures of white and blue clouds on paper, just approximately write down your ideas.

Try to make balanced maps, everyone can map "freak", "crazyness", but it's way harder to do nice maps. Don't say: "hey it's my first map and I don't care if you don't like it don't play it". About this specific map, you just discovered the editor and tried to "fill a quad". That's really bad for a map, but it's normal to start this way. Now you've discovered a little bit the teeworlds mapping tools, try following my advices, it's worth it, or at least I think so smile

Good luck,
Dune.

Re: [MAP] ctf_hook[W-S]

@Dune,

First of all, thanks for your advices.
I understand your point of vue, but I don't agree with everything you say.
I agree with the fact that my map is a bit "random", but it is how I saw it in my head, & I didn't "add respawn everywhere I can", I wanted to build something approximatively like this.
& I never said "hey it's my first map and I don't care if you don't like it don't play it" tongue If I didn't wanted some advices, I wouldn't have posted here.

I don't totally agree with the pen & paper method, 'cause I'm not able to draw x) But I agree with the fact that a map have to be "pre-thinked" before you start.

For me, teeworlds is a game where reflexes are essentials. And with this kind of map, you have to be ready to shot and to hook (without falling) everytime, and I like it. Me & my friends often play istangib mod, so with this kind of map, that's pretty cool, 'cause you're under pressure everytime. But that's just my point of vue. ( but maybe it sounds to you like the "race mods" sounds to me xD, i.e. useless & not at all in the tee-spirit).

No maps should be random. If you agree with the fac your map is "a bit random", you agree your map is "a bit a fail". Randomness is never a good thing for gameplay gameplay, and everything is bad for gameplay is bad for the map.

Then you really understood nothing to what I wrote. It's NOT about drawing, it's about putting your ideas on paper. I'm worst drawer ever, can't even draw properly a stickman, but I still put ideas on paper before mapping, and you should do it, every mapper should do it.

You always can say "for me you need a lot of *** for managing this map" on every map, even the suckiest. You can say "hey we need a lot of experience on lost because you don't have anywhere to hook, it's really hard to dodge lasers when you can't move properly, lost is a pro map!!!". Don't say your map is good simply because it is hard on some points of views. The spirit of that map (if there is one, except random) is just to survive, and you did not study any velcoity ramp, there is not 2 or 3 paths to the flag, there's an infinite number of paths, and don't say "why not". You shouldn't have to fight against the map - look all the official ones. While playing this map, you most of the time have to hook everywhere and can't really aim and enjoy the real game - means picking up health and armor to survive while flagging, not being killed every time somebody hooks you, that also means speed, ground everywhere and no fear of dying just because you failed a hook.

Dune, you're such a whiner. If the guy enjoys this map, and thought he wanted to share it with others who might enjoy it, why flame him?

I'm not flaming nor whining. Simply arguing on the points the mapper is discussing - like the randomness of the pickups, and I did not insult him at any point ; I know it's normal to start with this kind of map (quote: "it's normal to start this way") , that's why I'm trying to discuss with him on all the points that look incorrect to me, before people tell him: "Oh lol your map is so good but you should add ninjas on each block lol". It's kinda nice from him to post it here, why shouldn't we give him all the advices he need to quickly improve his mapping in place of encouraging him with mapping but not telling him all the points he need to fix? smile
Anyway, apologizes if I've been too rude, that was not my will.

+1 ^^

I played the map with some friends, & they liked it. I agree with everything you say, those are some good advices, I'll try to follow them, they're well thought out. But I still think that this map is fun, even if it is not a map like the "officials" ones.

Here my aims were :
- a map to replace those where we always play. (hook_or_die, ctf_space ...)
- a map where we can have fun tongue (the most important ! & it was fun ^^)

& it was a way to discover the editor.

So, according to me, it is a first map full of things to improve or change, but it is also a map where we can have fun, 'cause it's fun to play in a room with friends and hear them screaming when you make them fail & die, or laugh when you fail ... tongue

Edit : You don't need to apologize, I think that you were a bit rude, but you didn't "trolled". You just gave me advices, & I'm mature enough to understand what you wanna say without being offended.

Re: [MAP] ctf_hook[W-S]

well, gameplay might be good, but too simple for my tastes. also, it's not symmetrical, which means that one team may have a small/large advantage over the other.

Re: [MAP] ctf_hook[W-S]

my brother made that exact map 3 days ago.
your a copy cat lol

Ya, of course you always start with "funny" maps - so did I - where you're just trying to map unusual things, weird paths just to have fun. But I'm pretty sure in some weeks/months you'll get bored of that kind of map - and then you'll probably try to map more 'seriously', to produce something you would play not because the map is weird - you get pretty fast bored of that, once you get to know your map - but something you would have fun to play simply because it's balanced and well-thought.

Alias: I precisely think it's not in his aims to have a symetrical map, with accurate balancing for the two teams. But that's true it's a nice advice to try to map a symetric game layer - though it's not needed in my opinion.

Good luck WhiteSlash for your next maps! smile

Edit: sampilot: who cares when it's truely not his map, he did not expect for congratulations when posting this map. It's not like if he had posted ctf_lava asking for comments on his map.

Edit2: WhiteSlash: "But, [ctf_space] map is becoming boring.". Yeah, that's what I told you, and yours will probably become boring after some time, that's what I meant wink

Thanks for all your advices. I'll try to do something better the next time smile

PS : I did not copy anything, plus, I never played on a map looking that way... (my connection here is too bad to play online). I made the whole map by myself, I just took the "standards" tiles.
