While I truely miss the good old ctf1 / ctf2 games, this is a development not too uncommon when I think of it.
I know two other 2D shooting gammes, which both were designed as multi-hit-deaths, where the main stream (most successfull servers) went for a single-hit-death configurations.
1st game: Xpilots, one of the oldest graphical multiplayer games ever, where the default map "new globe" is hardly played, because you need there a lot of hits to kill someone. The most successfull maps of all are "new dark hell" and "bloodmusic" both instea-death configurations.
2nd game: Continuum (subspace): Also here originally an energy dependant game, where you need 2 or 3 hits to kill an enemy, where trenchwars is the single most successfull server. Also with a singleshot=death configuration (with exception of the spidership, which just disbables the firepower of another ship on the first hit and kills on the 3rd or 4th hit.)
Somehow seems to be a "natural" development people seem to prefer...
